Other Papers and Research Projects

Google Inc. – Ethical aspects of data collection (February, 2007)

This study paper discusses Google’s data gathering practices from an ethical and academical point of view. The first chapter introduces the reader to the start-up company Google, Inc. and its history.
Today, Google offers a whole range of web-based tools and services. Users of these tools and services voluntarily give possibly sensitive, private data to Google and trust the company to only use it for good purposes. Google, of course, pledges to do so, but in fact also uses the data to place personalized advertising.
The paper shows where and how Google collects massive amounts of private data. Finally, a discussion whether a large company with a quasi-monopole on the search engine-market should have insight into so many people’s lifes.
